It is also the first wine region in the world to use 100% organic grapes. Penedès is the birthplace of cava, Spain’s famous sparkling wine, and the incredible range of styles and grape varieties grown in the Penedès wine region make it a must-visit for any wine lovers! Local Catalan grapes such as Xarel·lo, Macabeu, and Parellada are central to cava production, while international varieties like Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive here too. In recent years, winemakers have also used native grapes such as Sumoll, Garnatxa, Xarel·lo, and Malvasia de Sitges to produce fabulous single varietal wines. We always choose wineries with a strong focus on native varieties so you'll get to try some of these unique wines.
