DESCRIPTION

Are you looking for a unique private cooking class in Barcelona, allowing you to truly experience Catalan gastronomy? There’s no better way to do it than joining our local, professionally-trained chef directly at her home, a beautifully restored 19th century flat in the heart of the city. You’ll get an intimate 4-hour fully hands-on cooking class in her large open kitchen. Using healthy, traditional family recipes and local, seasonal and organic ingredients, you’ll discover the real Catalan cuisine, as well as a range of cooking tips.

Your welcoming and professionally trained chef will make sure you feel at home, enjoy and take away precious memories from this truly unique experience. You can customize your menu between our menu options, choosing a combination of 2 tapas dishes for starters, 1 main dish and a dessert to be cooked.

The cooking time will be of approximately 3 hours, and then another hour will be dedicated for lunch or dinner. Just like a Barcelona family, we’ll sit at the table and eat the dishes together while exchanging stories and laughter. Handpicked, local and organic wines of the finest quality will be offered as food pairing to celebrate your creations.

Remember that classes are always private, creating an intimate setting and allowing for a lot of attention from your professionally-trained local chef. The classes are therefore adapted to both beginner and more advanced cooks, as well as professional chefs interested in discovering Catalan cuisine.

GROUP SIZE Private groups only. For big groups (10+), we would offer the experience in a different space, suited to your group’s needs. We can also come and cook at your apartment, rural house or in the location of your choice in Catalonia.

EXTRAS A market tour is available on request, most mornings and sometimes in the afternoon. You’ll visit a local market nearby the apartment of the chef. The tour will last 1 to 1,5 hour approx., for a total time of 5 to 5,5 hours for the whole experience.
SUITABLE FOR Everybody, the building is wheelchair accessible. Families welcome, discounted prices available for children.
ANY ALLERGIES/FOOD RESTRICTIONS? The whole apartment is fully gluten-free, which makes it the only cooking space guaranteed 100% safe for celiacs in Barcelona (the husband of our chef being celiac himself).
Pescetarian, vegetarian, lactose-free and vegan menus can also be designed on request.
All sorts of allergies can be accommodated, as long as it is specified at least 72 hours before the start of the experience.

Main dish options:

– Paella or rice casserole, surf and turf or vegetarian
– Meatballs with langoustines, a special recipe from my grandmother
– “Fricandó”, veal with mushrooms
– “Cim i Tomba”, fishermen’s typical dish made with white fish
– “Bacallà a la llauna”, cod fish with tomato sauce, our chef’s family recipe
– “Sípia ofegada amb patates”, squid stew with potatoes

Tapas options:

– Chickpeas with “samfaina sauce”, a typical sauce made with zucchini, peppers, tomatoes and eggplants
– “Calçotets”, similiar to a spring onion, with “romesco” sauce (it is made with nuts, tomatoes, special dry pepper…)
– “Empedrat”, white bean salad
– Chickpeas with wild mushrooms
– Buckwheat and carob flour cracker with “cor de bou” tomato variety
– Warm salad with chard, pinenuts, raisins and roasted butternut squash
– Omelette with garlic scapes

Dessert options:

– “Menjar blanc”, medieval custard dessert made with homemade almond milk
– “Gató Mallorquí”, biscuit made with almond flour
– My birthday apple cake
– Pears poached with red wine

Most of the food is local, seasonal and sourced straight from small local producers. All the recipes are tradional Catalan and Spanish recipes. The wines offered are local and sourced straight from small local producers.

Efforts are taken to reduce the amount of waste produced during the experience (plastic bags are avoided when purchasing ingredients, packages are reused, etc…). All the plastic, glass and paper waste produced is recycled, and compost is separated from trash. Non-recycled waste for this activity is close to 0.

1)Exclusive use of natural cleaning products (the whole place is chemical-free). 2)Furniture that has been built from recycled materials and restored old furniture. 3)Water used for cooking and drinking is filtered by reverse osmosis (rather than coming from bottled water).

Wonderful evening cooking!
We loved our cooking class with Nuria! We were two couples with virtually no cooking skills, but Nuria gave us all easy tasks to prepare a healthy dinner. We sat at her dining room table and enjoyed our dinner together discussing life in Barcelona. We really enjoyed that the class was in her home as opposed to a restaurant or more commercial location. Later, her husband and daughter joined us. Her husband is from New York originally and it was so interesting to hear his perspective on life in Barcelona. Nuria is an excellent chef, but the evening was so much more than just learning to cook.

Another great experience with Barcelona Slow Travel!
This time, my sister and I did the cooking class offered through Barcelona Slow Travel. Our teacher, Nuria, did a great job of creating and helping us execute a delicious meal of Spanish favorites. She put her own spin on traditional recipes to address health concerns. We had a great conversation about all sorts of topics as we enjoyed the fruits of our labor — and a bottle of wine. I would recommend the cooking class for adults and for families with teens. It was also interesting to see a “typical” Barcelona apartment. Cristina with BST, as always, was fantastic to work with. She helped me with some special requests and had great recommendations on things to do, restaurants, etc. They have really expanded their offerings, but if you don’t see exactly what you want, contact Cristina and see what ideas she has. I can’t recommend Barcelona Slow Travel enough!

Fantastic experience with Nuria!
The experience was very authentic and we enjoyed it thoroughly. Nuria is an excellent teacher and clearly very experienced in the kitchen. Her home is beautiful and provides a fantastic setting to take part in the cooking experience. We learnt new skills and new recipes that we will definitely be trying again at home. The food was delicious and we enjoyed learning about Catalan life and culture from Nuria. We even had a good political discussion over our lunch!

The highlight of our Barcelona Trip!
My husband and I spent a wonderful morning in Nuria’s family kitchen preparing a Catalan Chicken Paella and a gluten free apple desert. Nuria was a very patient teacher who explained that her guests come with all levels of cooking expertise and hoped that everyone would leave with some valuable cooking tips. We cooked with high quality food and enjoyed the results with her husband and daughter in her spotless home. Such gracious hosts!

Experiencia única!
Somos de Puerto Rico y estábamos visitando a Barcelona por primera vez. Queríamos tener una experiencia diferente donde pudiéramos conocer sobre la cultura catalana y que mejor que a través de la cocina. Nuria nos recibió en su hermoso hogar y disfrutamos una tarde muy bonita. No tan sólo aprendimos recetas catalanas y su confección, también aprendimos sobre la cultura y tradiciones catalanas. Los platos riquísimos y con ingredientes orgánicos y frescos. Para los que lleven un estilo de alimentación saludable es muy recomendable. Mis esposo y yo nos sentimos cómo en casa, por todas las atenciones recibidas. Nuria fue muy amable y hasta nos ayudó con otras actividades que querríamos hacer en Barcelona y teníamos dudas de donde realizarlas. En fin fue una experiencia única y diferente. Quedamos muy satisfechos, deseando regresar a Barcelona y nos encantaría volver a compartir experiencias como estas.
